New Girls Dorm – SOH

We launched the project to build a new Girls Dorm at Stream of Hope Home in Uganda in June.  The project was needed for a number of reasons.  The original house that came with the property is too small for the girls and needs renovations to meet the Ugandan Children’s Home Standards.  The new building is a copy of the Boys Dorm and will provide space to increase the number of children that we can serve.  This building will be completed in early October.

We started this project in faith, having no choice, and with 1/2 of the funding.  If you are led to be part of this project please contact us at missionservants.org.

Here is a months progress in reverse….

Trip for 15 to serve at the Kenyan and Ugandan Orphanages

Mission Servants has a large and ambitious trip about to commence to serve at the LSH home in Kenya and the SOH home in Uganda.  15 members will leave the US in 3 teams from 3 different places and coordinate in Africa.  One team working exclusively at LSH, one exclusively at SOH, and one team working at LSH then traveling to SOH.  This is the 15th Mission Servant Ministry trip and a complicated one so we are requesting constant prayer for safety, logistics, and planning wisdom.  The first team leaves on January 17th, the 2nd and 3rd teams on the 22nd and 29th.

We have a number of plans besides connecting with and loving on the 106 children at the two homes, 87 kids at the Lord’s Servants Academy, almost 20 workers at all the facilities, and hundreds of people at 4 affiliated churches.  We are bringing almost 2,000 pounds of tools, books, sewing machines, Bibles, clothing, lighting components, balls, and goodies.  In Nairobi before driving to the LSH in western Kenya, tools and supplies to improve the homes will be purchased.

Our big projects include: Completing the living touches to the LSH Guest House (lighting, plumbing, cabinetry, curtains) which will allow longer term mission trips and missionary stays.  Installing lighting, curtains, and shelving in the new SOH Boys Dorm.  Launch the project for the new SOH Kitchen/Dining Hall/Utility building.  Numerous smaller projects to improve the facilities and lives of the kids will be done at all facilities.  Medical checking and eye exams will be provided.

It will be exciting.  Please look out for our blog and Facebook posts.  Thank you for your prayers and support!

Christmas 2014 in Uganda and Kenya

Christmas is a special time at the SOH and LSH homes in Uganda and Kenya as well as where you are.   With the help of donations specifically for the Christmas fund the Directors, Pastor Paul and Pastor Moses, organize a celebration which includes a special meal, treats, clothes, trips, and gifts.  They all know that receiving the gift of God’s grace through Jesus Christ is what Christmas is about but special things make kids feel valued and is a very fun part of Christmas.  Thank you to everyone who helped make this possible!

The boys at the SOH home in Uganda got the best gift of all…a new home.  They moved out of the cramped rented quarters in the trading post onto the compound with the girls.  This 9 room building is one of the best for a dozen miles around.  Their walk to school is also a mile shorter each way.

The kids also had a special meal with goat meat and soda and gifts of new clothes and a new set of drums.  Singing and dancing is their favorite thing.

Look at that pile of food. He will eat it all.

The kids at LSH in Kenya got new clothes and a trip to a nature park.

Pretty smart Lydia!

Places to Bath and Toilet make a good home…

The term “Home Improvement” means a project to improve the house to us but at the Stream of Hope orphanage, it literally means an improvement to make it more like a HOME.

I talked about the exciting gift of new beds for the kids in my last post….Just as exciting to the kids, and something we take for granted, new toilets and bath houses were built for the boys and girls dorms.  I personally used the old 3 foot tall, doorless latrine and the well ventilated 3 sided bath stall so I know how much it is a valued improvement.

The community is taking notice about the blessings that God is bringing to these kids.  Better floors, latrines, bath heigyne, beds, and mosquito nets, shoes, medicine, and a food budget are adding up to these kids feeling valued and being healthier.  Thank you for your prayers and support!!

Merry Christmas!!!

Merry Christmas! and Happy New Year! are greetings and blessings of peace and hope.  I feel that the true blessing that we can give and receive is when you do more than say words but instead work toward making them true.  It is arguably true that after decades of international effort and trillions of dollars spent trying to bring peace and end hunger and disease in Africa, the situation is relatively unchanged and remains a tragedy of daunting proportions.  It is clear to me that A) the only true hope and peace is found in Jesus Christ and B) the people who are going to make the biggest changes in Africa are going to be Africans.  It is a necessity that we all work on both short-term needs and long-term solutions.

Thank you for working in general for peace and hope in the world through your faith and compassion in anything you do and specifically with us at The Lord’s Servants Home in Kitale, Kenya to raise up Godly, loving, future leaders that we currently know as our Kids.  We have spent 100% of the over $100,000 provided in 2012 for support, clothing, schooling, health, and new and upgraded facilities for soon to be 60 children.  A similar amount will be spent in 2013 and will accomplish the same goals including a new water well and classroom building for The Lord’s Servants Academy, both of which will serve the community around the orphanage in the same way, providing a practical means toward peace and hope, investing in sharing the love of Christ and in children.

It pulls at my heart when our children thank me for paying their school fees, and when they get excited about new clothes or a book.  I’m impressed how they work hard at chores and schoolwork and play even harder.  I love how they care for each other and how they sing to the top of their lungs praising God.  Lastly I’m humbled by the intensity of the prayers that come out of their little mouths in unison like a beehive.  I know they pray for us way more that we pray for them.  This all has to be very joyful to our Father.

So….May the Peace, Joy, Love, and Hope that God gave to the world through Jesus Christ reside and manifest in you and your family this season and always!

Thank you again and God bless you,

Bob and Kathy Hillebrand, Pastor Moses and the staff at the LSH, volunteers and helpers around the world, and the children.

Here is a great Christmas Song making me think about Africa…from 1984.

Another version…from 1989

And again….from 2004

Lyrics to Do They Know It’s Christmas :

(B. Geldof)
It’s Christmastime,
there’s no need to be afraid
At Christmastime,
we let in light and we banish shade
And in our world of plenty
we can spread a smile of joy
Throw your arms around the world
at Christmastime.
But say a prayer,
pray for the other ones
At Christmastime it’s hard,
but when you’re having fun
There’s a world outside your window,
and it’s a world of dread and fear
Where the only water flowing
is the bitter sting of tears
And the Christmas bells that ring there
are the clanging chimes of doom
Well tonight thank God it’s them
instead of you.
And there won’t be snow in Africa this Christmastime
The greatest gift they’ll get this year is life (Oooh)
Where nothing ever grows
No rain or rivers flow
Do they know it’s Christmastime at all?
Here’s to you raise a glass for everyone
Here’s to them underneath that burning sun
Do they know it’s Christmastime at all?
Feed the world
Feed the world
Feed the world
Let them know it’s Christmastime again
